Professional Development for the People!

June 25 - June 28, 2019

SLMDances is excited to invite dancers and artists into our creative process through a week of movement, discussion, learning and performance.

PD for the People! is a 4-day workshop featuring movement experiences and professional development opportunities that embody the SLMDances core values: Dreaming, Humanity, Activism, Community, Transparency and Learning.

“I enjoy creating containers in which people can be nourished in multiple ways,” reflects Founder & Artistic Director Sydnie L. Mosley.

Technique Class and Repertory Workshop Description

SLMDances believes that every human should have the opportunity to cultivate an understanding of their own physical instrument as an access point to discovering who they are as a person. We open class by checking in with our individual bodies, and by doing so check in with one another. We make eye contact. Breathe together. Then, our movement journey travels fluidly between modern dance techniques, somatics, improvisation, and movement of the African Diaspora. Once our bodies are warm and active, we will explore phrases from SLMDances’ repertory and participate in the development of a new creation.

Dancers are expected to participate for the full time each day.

PD 2: Making Socially Engaged Dance

In this process-based workshop, SLMDances shares tools and best practices for creating dance with and for communities through the lens of their current work in process PURPLE. Founder Sydnie L. Mosley will share who SLMDances is, what they do and how they do it. Dancers will participate in movement activities that build trust and accountability. Other exercises will model how to create dance work that explores strategies to respond to social justice issues. Dancers should bring paper and a writing utensil, as well as be ready to move.

There is so much to reflect on, synthesize, take at face value, and apply to different situations. The work is multi-dimensional and it speaks to different aspects of being human, and being in community.

PD 3: BodyBusiness Resource Sharing:
getting what you NEED with what you HAVE

Through a series of artist-guided activities, SLMDances will share practices that work towards a cooperative economy based on trust, value transparency and accountability, all while honoring individual voices. In this session, artists will reflect on what they have & what they need, equitably distribute resources, experience how a cooperative economy operates, and together, find ways to shift the culture in our day-to-day.

It has been so challenging for me in all the best ways. So happy to start my summer like this.

June 28
Informal Public Studio Showing

All participants who take part in the full week of Technique + Repertory workshops are invited to perform on Friday evening as a capstone of our work together. The impact of our performance work is activated through its engagement with audiences.

Enjoy the opportunity to share your week of work with your broader community!
