Join SLMDances as we reflect on 10 years of organizing community workshops to respond to gender-based street harassment in New York City.
In this special virtual community workshop co-hosted with Black Dance Change Makers and as a part of International Anti-Street Harassment Week 2021, we invite all who experience gender-based harassment in public spaces for an evening of movement, storytelling, and discussion. We will consider the importance of centering the body and movement in the resistance, and reflect on how public discourse has evolved since we began this work in 2011.

About The Window Sex Project
The Window Sex Project (TWSP) is ongoing community engaged work that SLMDances began in commitment to providing liberated spaces for young adult folks who experience gender-based street harassment to voice their concerns, find agency, community support and take action in response to the violence against their bodies in public space. Since 2011, we have facilitated workshops in community partnership with Hollaback!, Stop Street Harassment, Girls for Gender Equity, Barnard Center for Research on Women, One Life Wellness, Five Boro Story Project, Sixth Street Wellness, Honey & Chi, and have conducted workshops at Harlem School of the Arts, Grosvenor YMCA, Barnard College, Brooklyn YWCA, Black Girl Project Sisterhood Summit, Center for Anti Violence Education, I, Too Arts Collective // Langston Hughes House, and more.
Past speakers have included: Kimberlynn Acevedo, Jamilah Lemieux, Dash Harris, Nicola Briggs, Leah King, Feminista Jones, Nuala Cabral, Michele Hope, KK de la Vida, and Ericka Hart.
In our history of doing this work, funding for The Community Workshops have been made possible in part with public funds from Creative Engagement, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council and administered by Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC). LMCC serves, connects and makes space for artists and community. SLMDances has received additional resources and support from Barnard Center for Research on Women, The Gothe Family, and Gibney's ICAT Community.
